Facing a Dental Emergency? Get clear first-aid steps for knocked-out teeth, cracked teeth, and severe toothaches before you reach our Chinchwad clinic.

A Dental Emergency rarely happens at a convenient time. Whether it’s a sudden knock, a cracked tooth mid-meal, or pain that comes out of nowhere, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can genuinely make a difference in how the situation turns out.

What Actually Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue needs immediate attention, but some absolutely do. General guidance: if there’s uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, a knocked-out tooth, or visible trauma to the face or jaw, treat it as an emergency and seek care right away.

Knocked-Out Tooth

This is one of the most time-sensitive Dental Emergency. What to do:

  1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), never touch the root
  2. If it’s dirty, rinse gently with water, don’t scrub it
  3. Try to reinsert it into the socket if possible, biting down gently to hold it in place
  4. If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep it in a container of milk or your own saliva, never plain water
  5. Get to a dentist within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth

The faster you act, the higher the odds of successfully saving the tooth.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

Dental Emergency
Broken Tooth
  1. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water
  2. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
  3. If there’s a sharp edge, cover it temporarily with dental wax or sugar-free gum to avoid cutting your tongue or cheek
  4. Avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen

Even if it doesn’t hurt much, a cracked tooth should still be checked, some cracks worsen over time or become infected if left alone.

Severe Toothache

  1. Rinse with warm salt water to clean the area
  2. Gently floss around the tooth in case trapped food is contributing to the pain
  3. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, not direct heat
  4. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed, avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, it can burn the tissue

Persistent, severe pain often points to something that needs professional treatment, not just symptom management.

Object Stuck Between Teeth

  1. Try gently removing it with floss
  2. Avoid sharp objects like pins or needles, they can injure your gums or push the object further
  3. If it won’t come out, don’t force it, come in and we’ll remove it safely

Lost Filling or Crown

  1. Keep the crown if it came off intact, bring it with you
  2. Temporary dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can hold it in place short-term
  3. Avoid chewing on that side until it’s properly reattached
  4. Don’t use super glue or household adhesives, they’re not safe for use in the mouth

Bitten Lip, Tongue, or Cheek

  1. Clean the area gently with water
  2. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  3. If bleeding doesn’t stop within 15 minutes, or the cut is deep, seek care immediately

Swelling or Signs of Infection

Facial swelling, especially combined with fever or difficulty swallowing, needs urgent attention. This can indicate a spreading infection, which requires prompt treatment, sometimes beyond just dental care alone.
